SkelStart Engine Start Module Uses Ultracapacitors to Eliminate Dead Batteries

Skeleton Technologies’ new ultracapacitor-based 24 V Engine Start Module (SkelStart ESM) is designed to ensure trouble-free engine starting in any conditions.

Batteries are a major headache in the trucking industry, particularly in cold climates. Long-haul drivers often leave engines idling for long periods to keep batteries charged. Starting failures occur when trucks are not used for periods of time, or when lifting systems use too much energy from the battery.

Ultracapacitors can provide much higher power than lead-acid batteries, offer lifetimes up to 500 times longer, and can operate in temperatures as low as -65° C. The SkelStart ESM uses ultracapacitors to provide starting power – the batteries are only required to provide low power loads once the engine is running.

“Since installing the SkelStart ESM we have had no starting problems whatsoever,” says Priit Tamme, a fleet manager for a Baltic logistics company. “The unit is particularly useful when the engine cannot be kept idling because of local restrictions and when the batteries have been drained from using the lift gate. Previously we were changing the batteries every two years but we expect much longer battery life using the SkelStart ESM.”

“With a very simple installation, truck owners and fleet operators can significantly improve the efficiency of their fleet,” says Märt Pikkani, Head of Module Development at Skeleton Technologies. “The SkelStart ESM delivers fuel savings, up to 50% extended battery life, faster cranking, reliable starting, well-rested drivers and reduced pollution.”
